    Understanding Net Income

    ZohaibBy Zohaib

The Net Income report answers the question that matters most at the end of any month: after everything came in and everything went out, how much did you actually keep? It's the same math as the totals row at the bottom of your budget table, but here it's the star of the page, with a lot more ways to slice it.

    Two ways to view it

    • Sankey diagram (the default view): a visual flow showing your income categories merging into a single "Total Income" pool, then splitting back out into your expense categories.
    • Table view: a traditional grid, an Income section, an Expenses section, and totals underneath, closer to what you'd see in a spreadsheet.

    Reading the table

The Income section lists every income category with its total for the selected period. The Expenses section does the same for spending. Below both, three rows sum things up: Total Income, Total Expenses, and a bold Net Income row (Income minus Expenses) set off with its own accent border so it stands out from everything above it.

    Reading the Sankey diagram

Read it left to right: each income category flows in as its own colored band, sized proportionally to how much it contributed. All of those bands merge into the "Total Income" node in the middle, then flow back out into your expense categories on the right, again sized by amount. A wider band simply means a bigger number, so the biggest bands are the categories doing the most work in your month.

    Customizing the table

    • Columns: break the single-period table out into Weeks, Months, Quarters, or Years, which adds one column per period plus a Total column summarizing the whole range.
    • Amount filter: switch between Show All and Non-Zero to hide categories with no activity in your selected range.
    • Emoji toggle: show or hide the little category icons in the leftmost column, purely a display preference.

A couple of controls still in progress

You may notice a "% of Income" column toggle and a Tags breakdown toggle in the table controls. Both are visible today but not wired up to anything yet, they're not broken, just not finished. Don't worry if clicking them doesn't seem to do anything.

Tip: Click any category row, or any node in the Sankey diagram, to jump straight into the transactions behind that number for the selected period.
